A scene from a school day

Call Student's Mom

It is not a difficult call. That is almost the point. His reading has turned a corner in the last three weeks, and his mom — who has had a run of the other kind of phone call from school — should hear it from you.

You decide this at pickup on Tuesday, standing by the door with your coat half on. You will call tomorrow, at lunch.

Tomorrow has a fire drill in it. Lunch has a spilled tray, a lost jacket and a conversation with a colleague that could not wait. By the time you are back in the room the afternoon has started, and the call moves to after school. After school, there is a staff meeting you had written down in the other planner.

At nine that night you are on the sofa, not thinking about work, and it lands on you: the call. Too late to make it. And it is not the task that stings — it is that this was the good news, the call you actually wanted to make, and it was the one thing that fell.

You will make it on Thursday. You will also spend Wednesday night carrying it, which is the cost nobody counts: a small thing you meant to do, sitting in your head overnight, taking up the room your own evening needed.

Wanting to make the call was never in doubt. Holding on to it through a fire drill, a spilled tray and a staff meeting is what asked too much.

Teacher Reminder is somewhere to put it down. Two seconds in the moment it comes up, and it is waiting for you when you have room for it.

Written as a scene rather than an interview: nobody is named here and nothing is quoted, because no teacher told us this one. If you are a teacher and your own morning went like this, we would rather print yours.
